(Larry Hager, President, Hager Foundation)
The Owensboro Stand For Children initiative owes its founding and existence to the tremendous vision, support, effort of Hager Foundation President Larry Hager. The Hager Foundation funded a bus trip for forty-three local child advocates and service providers to participate along with 250,000 others in the extraordinary June 1st Stand for Children at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Special thanks also must go to Sally Fager who presented, so convincingly, the initial appeal that Owensboro had to be represented at such a significant child advocacy gathering as the Stand For Children.

Audubon Area Community Services, Inc. served as the fiscal agent for the pilgrimage and Ronald Logsdon, its executive director, handled the on-tour finance duties. The Stand for Children event was organized under the auspices of the...

"Shades of Light" singers of the Mary Kendall Home; and the Children's Choir of the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

(Messenger-Inquirer photo of the Zion choir)
The Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer reported the service in its October 21st issue, saying:

"The services's most memorable images were those of the children themselves." (Greg Kocher, reporter) From the time the Rev. Jerry Lang, president of the local ministerial association, called the 90-minute service to order, that was certainly true -- and appropriately so since this was a service about children and their well-being. Kocher reported the "prayer that acted as a charge to the congregation," when she said, "Oh, God, we pray for our children and for our neighbor's children. Help us to remember that all these people are our neighbors, and all of their children are our own."

The photo at the left from the Messenger-Inquirer pictures a Zion Children's Choir member especially enjoying her participation in the service.

The Children's Defense Fund has established a Stand For Children Action Center to "help Ameicans keep standing for children every day." The Action Center's interactive Web site features a wide variety of resources for communities and individuals who wish to continue to stand for children.

To go to that Web site, Click here or on the Stand For Children logo to the left.

Please don't miss the Stand For Children page on the Children's Defense Fund's own Web site either. You may access it at www.tmn.com/cdf/stand.html. That site also includes the full text of Marian Wright Edelman's speech at the Stand for Children -- and many other speeches as well.

The Healthy Child Care America Campaign promotes partnerships between families, child care providers, and health care providers to promote the healthy development of young children and linking them to needed health care services. The "Blueprint for Action" (this linked site) provides communities with steps they can take to link families to existing health care resources, expand existing family-linked health care resources, or create new ones.
