A Problem Solving Model

By Kenneth W. Keller

Here is a six step model that you can apply to solve your marketing and business problems. You might want to print this out and keep it handy for use throughout the year.

  1. Define the problem. If a problem is well defined it is usually half solved! Make certain that you aren't addressing a symptom.
  2. Analyze the problem. Tear the problem apart. The first step is to compare what exists to the desired state. Then, set a goal so that you will know when the problem has been solved. Third, avoid the common pitfall of assuming that you know the answer before you begin to analyze the problem!
  3. Generate possible solutions. Each problem has several possible solutions. List all possible solutions, making sure that each meets your objective(s).
  4. Evaluate solutions. One way to do this is rank the solutions in terms of what you value: cost, ease to implement, time involved, and so forth.
  5. Make the decision. "Analysis paralysis" is a common problem, as is procrastination. Make a decision when you've gone through the process.
  6. Monitor the results. If you have solved the problem then please check to make sure that you are getting the desired results (plan versus actual).

This model is basic, but effective. And, it's a good idea to write down how you've gone about solving a specific problem, if only for the sake of having something to refer back to if when you evaluate results (step # 6) and things aren't working out. That way you won't have to reinvent the wheel!

I used this system last year to evaluate a number of opportunities, and solve several critical problems. I used it to focus my business and gain new clients. You can use it for a number of possibilities, including growing your business or getting a raise and/or promotion.
