"Philosophy in a Nutshell"

By the Community Trust Institute, Leslie Anne Klusmire, AICP, ASLA
(Adapted for AACS use)

  • Believe that you/we can Transform (y)our Future

"The significant problems we face cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them."
    --Albert Einstein

  • Reclaim Your Power

We own the system, we are the system, it's up to us to transform our world.

  • Take Time

"We often engage in Fear, Frantic, Frenzy - We don't think we have enough time. We need to let go and Trust - We have time and we must move forward in a way that brings healing and trust."
-- Daniel Kemmis, May 1995 Community Trust Institute Symposium

  • Understand that you are not In Control

We don't need to manipulate, propagandism and game our way into change. It won't take hold this way anyway.

    Remember too...

    • There are no quick fixes
    • Be a Mensch -- "a person having admirable characteristics,
such as fortitude and firmness of purpose"
    • Choose the open door
    • Widen the circle
    • Right relationship
    • Work local -- on yourself, with your community
    • Commit to the long haul
    • Make room for Grace and miracles

Outdated Tools -- Pitfalls and Roadblocks...

    • It's His Fault - Blaming problems on people
    • Looking for a savior-hiring experts or seeking personalities to solve problems
    • Losing Control -- But, if we don't intervene this, the whole thing will fail!!!
    • Confusion - Recognizing and working the Cycles of Growth and Change
    • Addiction to Turmoil and Crisis -- Spotting the signs and breaking the cycle
    • The Naysayers -- Learn how to handle chronic complainers...professionally
    • Hidden Agendas -- Keeping your objective under the table
    • Manipulating information and people to serve your own "righteous" cause
    • They are the enemy -- and we've got to save us from them
