So you want to be a public speaker?
(c) 1998 Vickie Sullivan Public speaking can offer you credibility, exposure and yes, even more business for the expert or entrepreneur. But like jumping off a cliff -- that first step really counts. Below are three common "myths" to becoming a public speaker along with the reality. Myth #1:
The more exposure to master speakers, the higher the expectations of the audience. Before taking the leap, check out your ratings with similar audiences.
Myth #2:
My book will get me all the speaking engagements I want. Only if the world already knows about it! Yes, writing a book gives you credibility, as most organizations associate authors with a draw. What gets you bookings is the publicity that your book generates, making you the "expert" according to objective sources. Media coverage has a high wow factor with decision makers, as they consider that as validation of your work. But no, a book in and of itself will not get you speaking engagements.Myth #3:
My appearance on Oprah, Geraldo, Good Morning America, etc. will get me all the speaking engagements I want. The number of guests are so high on many shows that the chance you went once is not enough. Further, where is just as important than how often. Multiple exposures in the national trade press can create more speaking business than one article on page 48D in The Wall Street Journal.
