GRITS has been named Green River Area's
agency.
Rajen D. Shah, GRITS Transit ManagerMost riders receive services through contracts GRITS holds with other agencies and programs whose clientele need transportation. Through the coordinated transportation approach, all provider interests can receive cost-effective transportation support while concentrating on those services they do best and not unnecessarily diverting their limited resources into vehicles, drivers, maintenance, insurance and such. Meanwhile, GRITS provides the needed service with better cost ratios, quality vehicles, and professional staff.
GRITS services are radio dispatched throughout the seven-county Green River Area. Services operate weekdays on a demand-response schedule determined daily as client needs dictate. Normally, clients arrange transportation needs by calling the GRITS 800 toll free number the previous day.
Under contract with the City of Owensboro, a large Western Kentucky city, GRITS provides "handicap" transportation for the Owensboro Transit System (OTS). Services under contract with OTS operate 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. six days a week (every day except Sunday).

As of January 1, 1999, GRITS will be the "broker" for a wide range of transportation services provided under the auspices of the Empower Kentucky Human Services Transportation agency. The Empower Kentucky designation denotes that this is a multi-Cabinet collaborative service. GRITS will, thus, broker and provide new and expanded transportation services in the Green River Area for the four Kentucky Cabinets of Families and Children, Health Services, Transportation, and Workforce Development.
