RE: 1998-99 Committee Appointments
Thank you for your input/requests regarding committee service. By and large, I have been able to assign members their first choice or alternate choice.
Structuring this year’s committees posed a number of challenges. First, the Board voted at the June annual meeting to restructure the entire Board committee system. Second, we still have By-Laws (which have not yet been changed to accommodate the June restructuring) which also impose certain "structure" requirements on AACS committees—for example, the "tripartite" composition of committees. Third, the Board’s officers this year do not themselves come, as typical, from each of the three sectors: public, private, and consumer.
In brief, here’s what I did to accommodate these factors which were at times at cross purposes with one another:
We will need—very soon—to deal with the By-Laws issue to bring our By-Laws, into conformity with the June Board Committee restructuring and perhaps other changes wrought as a result of the 1997-98 Strategic Directions Initiative (SDI) strategic planning work.
Attached are the committee appointments for 1998-99.
Please note that beyond these, there may need to be additional subcommittees appointed. Discussions to date (through SDI sessions) have centered around the idea that the "committees" may then sub-divide their work as each sees necessary and appropriate.
One committee, the Administrative Committee clearly already has four areas it needs to organize around: staff development; marketing/public relations; strategic planning and operations; and fiscal. Each of the others may deem it appropriate to structure some subcommittees around various "programmatic spheres of interest—Head Start and child care for the Child and family committee, for example.
Finally, there will be additional special appointments to be made: two Board members each to serve on the Lincolnshire and Lincolnshire North Boards; an ex-officio representative to the Head Start Policy Council; and perhaps additional ex-officio Board representatives to other and advisory councils and collaborative partners’ Boards (subject to their shared interest in doing so).
If you have any questions or concerns regarding these appointments, please contact me.
